Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath is an action-adventure video game developed by Oddworld Inhabitants and published by Electronic Arts for the Microsoft Xbox. The game details the adventures of Stranger, a fearsome bounty hunter who pursues and captures outlaws in order to collect bounties. The goal is to ultimately earn enough moolah (in-game money) to pay for a mysterious life-saving operation. One of the most notable features is the “live ammunition” system, which is ammunition made of living creatures like small mammals, each with different uses and effects against enemies.
The game begins with Stranger hearing about the story of the Grubbs, whose used to live in a town but they are now tortured by a demon. Their only hope, a race of creatures called the Steef are now extinct, so they need a new protector. When Stranger arrives to the town, he discovers that the nearby river was destroyed by a dam, built by a person named Sekto. Stranger is given a seemingly irresistible offer to hunt down the remaining Steef, but things get more complicated when it turns out that the hunter also belongs to the mystical race. Stranger promptly escapes to save the Grubbs and destroy Sekto, who also has a strange secret about his origins…
The music for Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath was composed by Michael Bross, who also scored the Oddworld: Munch’s Oddysee. The sound designer’s career actually started with some classic FMV games like Ripper (starring Christopher Walken) and Black Dahlia (starring Dennis Hopper). After Oddworld, he also scored new installments of the Ratchet & Clank (Insomniac / Sony) series, including Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One and Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault. Bross’ discography includes solo artist and soundtrack releases with a history of distribution by Canada’s largest indie record label, Nettwerk.
Bross composed over Oddworld: Stranger’s Wrath, plus he also voiced some of the characters as a bonus. The score matches the game’s title by conjuring a truly eclectic electro-redneck atmosphere, combining elements of techno and western scoring into a highly explosive mixture. Our program has been assembled from the best moments of the hours’ worth of material that include wicked mood paintings for the fantasy world, percussive battle cues for finding the outlaws and moments of relaxation four the regeneration of our bounty hunter.
