KeepMoving presents a new CD dedicated to the concert and film works of Pavel Tursunov.
The suite from Without a Dowry is based on a ballet written by Honored Artist of Russia Elizabeth Nebesnaya, who had performed the role of Guljan in my Tursunov’s previous ballet, Khoja Nasreddin. Based on Ostrovsky’s well-known play, the two-act ballet would cast Nebesnaya in the role of Larisa, a woman torn between four possible husbands. The Life of Avvakum is inspired by the research of the composer’s wife, Professor Irina Tursunova. Archpriest Avvakum’s life story and memorable death for standing up to his faith-inspired this four-movement suite, timed in for 2020, the 400th anniversary of Avvakum’s birth.
The second half of the album includes selections from three films scored by Tursunov. Athenian Evenings (2000) was born out of themes originally written for playwright Pyotr Gladilin whose insistence in using on these themes eventually lead to the writing of the score. Elyor Ishmukhamedov’s The Heiress (2001) was a two-part miniseries features the musicians of the Edelweiss jazz quartet mixed in with an orchestral session – the music was nominated at the Spolokhi Festival in Arkhangelsk as “best music for a television film”. Finally, Soceress Recipe (2003) once again features the Edelweiss quartet in a bohemian-flavoured score for Tatiana Voronetskaya’s picture.
The booklet features commentary from the composer sharing various stories of these works.
